CeMAP® self-study means preparing for the five unit exams on your own, with Walbrook's study materials and free practice, instead of paying a training provider. This guide explains what is free, what you must pay for, and how to plan. It applies across the UK; only part of CeMAP 3 has a Scottish version. For how the qualification works overall, see the CeMAP qualification guide. Facts were checked on 30 October 2026 in the CeMAP qualification specification and on the Walbrook (LIBF) CeMAP page.
Can you pass CeMAP with self-study alone?
You can pass CeMAP with self-study alone: the specification describes it as "primarily considered as a distance learning qualification with on-demand examination sessions", and the £735 registration includes online study texts, one specimen exam per unit and a weekly study planner.
Walbrook does not require a course. Its CeMAP page says that using a learning support provider "is entirely up to you – it is not a requirement of your studies". Everything a candidate is examined on is in the published syllabus and the study texts.
Self-study suits you if:
- you can protect six to ten hours a week for several months;
- you are comfortable reading regulatory material and making your own notes;
- you will practise under timed conditions rather than only re-reading.
It is harder if you are new to financial services and find dense regulatory text slow going. That is when a course, or extra video material, earns its price (see "When is a paid course worth it?" below).
| Route | What you pay | Who teaches you |
|---|---|---|
| Pure self-study | £735 Walbrook registration | You, with Walbrook's texts |
| Self-study plus paid practice | £735 plus practice tools | You, with exam-format practice |
| Self-paced online course | £735 plus a course fee | Recorded tutors |
| Live course | £735 plus a higher course fee | Live tutors |
Fees as of October 2026, from Walbrook's CeMAP page. The CeMAP course guide compares the course options in detail.
Key fact: The registration, exams and certificate always come from Walbrook. A course, free or paid, is only extra tuition on top.
Can you do CeMAP for free?
You cannot do CeMAP for free: the exams and the certificate come only through Walbrook registration, which costs £735 for the full qualification or £330, £320 and £160 by module, as of October 2026. Preparation can be free; the qualification itself cannot.
"Free CeMAP" searches usually mean one of three things, and the answers differ:
| What people mean | Is it free? |
|---|---|
| A free CeMAP qualification or certificate | No. Only Walbrook awards CeMAP, and registration is paid |
| Free CeMAP study material | Partly. Official rules and tax rates are free online; the study texts come with registration |
| Free CeMAP training | Some providers offer free sample modules or recordings; practice sites offer free questions |
CeMAP can be free to you if someone else pays. Employers who recruit trainee mortgage advisers often fund it, and it is a mandated qualification in the Level 3 Mortgage adviser apprenticeship standard in England. Our trainee mortgage adviser guide looks at those roles.
The cheapest paid route is full registration, the included materials and free practice, passing each unit first time. A resit costs £120, so avoiding one is worth more than most extras. The CeMAP cost guide sets out every fee.
Key fact: "Free CeMAP course with certificate" offers can give you a certificate of completion from the provider. That is not the CeMAP qualification, and it does not meet the FCA standard.
What do you get when you register with Walbrook?
Registering with Walbrook for CeMAP gets you online study texts for CeMAP 1 and 2, interactive revision for CeMAP 3, one specimen exam per unit, a tax table, a weekly study planner, syllabus updates and the first attempt at all five exams.
Walbrook's CeMAP page lists the materials:
| Item | Included in the fee? |
|---|---|
| Online study texts for Modules 1 and 2 | Yes |
| Printed study text | No (sold on Amazon) |
| Module 3 interactive revision, protection content and optional soft skills material | Yes |
| Unit introduction videos | Yes |
| One specimen exam per unit | Yes; extra ones £25 a unit or £40 a module |
| Weekly study planner | Yes |
| Tax table | Yes |
| Syllabus updates | Yes |
| Student discussion forum, MyLIBF portal, KnowledgeBank library | Yes |
| First attempt at each unit exam | Yes |
| CeMAP Revision Tool | No; £90, £120 or £180 |
The tax table matters. Walbrook does not publish which tax year applies to which exam window, so use the table it gives you, not figures from an old textbook or website.
The specimen exam is the only official practice paper. Walbrook does not publish past papers, and our CeMAP past papers guide explains what exists and what does not.
Exam tip: Keep your one free specimen exam per unit until you are nearly ready. It is the best check of Walbrook's own question style, and you only get one.
Which free resources are worth using?
The free resources worth using for CeMAP are the official sources the syllabus is built on, such as the FCA Handbook and gov.uk tax pages, plus free exam-format practice. Free sources are reliable when they are primary; unofficial PDFs often still teach the pre-2025 structure.
Official and primary sources (free)
| Source | Use it for | Units |
|---|---|---|
| FCA Handbook, MCOB | Mortgage conduct rules: advice, disclosure, affordability, arrears | MRT1, MRT2, ASEW |
| FCA Handbook, TC and PRIN | Training and competence; the Principles and Consumer Duty | FRE1, FRE2 |
| gov.uk Stamp Duty Land Tax rates | SDLT bands for purchase-cost questions | MRT1, ASEW |
| MoneyHelper | Plain-English explanations of arrears, equity release and protection | MRT2, ASEW |
| FSCS and Financial Ombudsman Service | Compensation limits and complaint routes | FRE2 |
| legislation.gov.uk | The Acts named in the syllabus | FRE1, FRE2 |
These are the rules the exam tests, in their own words. Use them to check a point, not as a replacement for the study text: the Handbook is far larger than the syllabus.
Free practice from us
Every unit has these free, with no account:
- a 20-question diagnostic in 30 minutes (for ASEW, two whole case studies);
- a 20-question quick practice with explanations;
- the full timed mock 1 in the real unit format;
- a printable worksheet with an answer key, for every unit except ASEW;
- free study notes.
Our questions are original exam-style questions, not past papers. The CeMAP practice papers guide explains how each mock follows its unit's format.
What to be wary of
Free "CeMAP study material PDF" downloads are often old Walbrook texts or third-party notes for the old seven-unit structure (UKFR, Units 1 to 7, ASSM). Walbrook's own CeMAP page warns that materials not offered by an accredited provider "might be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date". If a resource does not name FRE1, FRE2, MRT1, MRT2 and ASEW, check its date before you trust its figures.
Key fact: The FSCS deposit limit rose to £120,000 per person per authorised institution from 1 December 2025. Free material quoting £85,000 for deposits predates that change.
Is there a free CeMAP course with a certificate?
There is no free CeMAP course with a certificate in the qualification sense. Only Walbrook issues the CeMAP certificate, after you pass all five unit exams under a paid registration. A free course can prepare you; it cannot award CeMAP or meet the FCA standard.
What does exist:
- Free sample modules. Some training providers give away one module of a paid course so you can try it.
- Free training recordings. At least one organisation on Walbrook's accredited provider list advertises free CeMAP training recordings with a forum, on 30 October 2026.
- Free practice questions. Several sites, including this one, offer free questions and mocks.
- Certificates of completion. Some free online courses issue their own certificate. It records that you finished their course, nothing more.
The FCA lists CeMAP in its table of appropriate qualifications, TC App 4.1, under Walbrook. A provider's completion certificate is not on that list. If an employer asks for "CeMAP or equivalent", they mean the qualification, not a course certificate.
Exam tip: Use a free course for what it is good at, a second explanation of a hard topic. Do not let it replace the Walbrook study text, which is written to the syllabus you are examined on.
How do you build a CeMAP self-study timetable?
You build a CeMAP self-study timetable by dividing 250 hours by your available weeks, giving each of the five units its 50 hours, and ending every unit with timed mocks. At 10 hours a week, each unit takes about five weeks.
A working method for each unit:
- Diagnose. Take a free diagnostic first, so you know which learning outcomes need most time.
- Read in order. Work through the study text one learning outcome at a time. Make short notes in your own words.
- Drill as you go. After each learning outcome, answer 20 to 30 topic questions and read every explanation, including for the ones you got right.
- Mix it up. In the last week, sit timed mocks in the real format. Walbrook's pass mark is 70% for every unit.
- Check readiness. Our rule is three mocks in a row at 85% or more, with every topic at 80% or more.
- Sit and move on. Exams are on demand, with no booking. Start the next unit straight away.
A 10-hours-a-week week
| Day | Session | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 1.5 hours | Read one section of the study text and make notes |
| Tuesday | 1 hour | Topic questions on yesterday's section |
| Thursday | 1.5 hours | Read the next section |
| Friday | 1 hour | Topic questions and a flashcard review |
| Saturday | 3 hours | Catch up, then a short timed paper |
| Sunday | 2 hours | Review every mistake from the week |
Walbrook's suggested order is FRE1, MRT1, FRE2, MRT2, then CeMAP 3 last. Our CeMAP revision guide covers revision techniques unit by unit.
Exam tip: Write down why each wrong answer was wrong, not just the right answer. In regulation-heavy units, the wrong options are usually real rules applied to the wrong situation.
When is a paid course worth it?
A paid CeMAP course is worth it when self-study is not working: you keep missing your weekly hours, a unit's mock scores are stuck below 70%, or you learn far better from a tutor. Courses cost about £200 to £1,250 on top of £735.
Signs that you would benefit:
- You stall on CeMAP 1. Regulation and ethics are the least familiar topics for newcomers, and Walbrook's own page calls CeMAP 1 "often considered the most challenging module".
- You need deadlines. A live course with fixed dates gives structure that self-study lacks.
- You failed a unit twice. Two resits cost £240; a course for that module may cost less than a third attempt.
- Your employer will pay. Then the cost question disappears.
Signs that you would not: you are already scoring above 80% in timed mocks, or you work in mortgages and mainly need to learn the regulatory detail.
If you want something between free and a full course, Walbrook's optional extras are cheaper: the CeMAP Revision Tool (£90 to £180), revision videos (£125 per module group) and audio revision (£50), as of October 2026. Our CeMAP course guide compares named providers by price and format.
Key fact: Walbrook says only providers in its Accredited Learning Support Provider scheme may claim to be accredited by it. Check the list on Walbrook's site before you pay.
Your CeMAP self-study plan
Your CeMAP self-study plan starts with the free FRE1 diagnostic: 20 questions in 30 minutes, with no account, showing which of FRE1's five learning outcomes needs most of your first 50 hours. Then study, drill and sit timed mocks until you are well above 70%.
- Take the free FRE1 diagnostic.
- Register with Walbrook when you can start studying straight away; full registration is £735 as of October 2026.
- Study FRE1 with the Walbrook text. Use the free printable FRE1 worksheet with answers for sessions away from a screen.
- Drill your weakest outcome; for most candidates that is the FCA, PRA and Handbook drill.
- Sit the free FRE1 mock 1: 40 questions in one hour, 28 to pass.
- Repeat for MRT1, FRE2, MRT2 and CeMAP 3. For CeMAP 3, start with the free ASEW diagnostic, which is two whole case studies.
Mock 1, the quick practice and the diagnostic are free for every unit. If you want mocks 2 to 10, topic drills, case-study practice and every study note for all five units, Pro costs £6.99 a week, £11.99 a month or £22.99 for 3 months, and you can cancel anytime. That is still self-study, at a fraction of a course fee, and like any practice tool it offers no pass guarantee.
Exam tip: Self-study fails quietly. Set a date for each unit exam when you start it, and tell someone, so the deadline is real.
Frequently asked questions
+Is CeMAP online only?
The study materials for CeMAP 1 and CeMAP 2 are online, and every exam is taken online on Brightspace with remote invigilation. You can buy a printed copy of the study text separately. Classroom teaching exists only through independent training providers, not through Walbrook.
+Does the Open University offer CeMAP?
No. CeMAP is awarded only by Walbrook, trading as LIBF, so no university can award it. General free courses on money and finance can give useful background, but they are not CeMAP and do not count towards it.
+Can I get CeMAP funded?
Often, yes, through an employer. Walbrook accepts corporate cohort registrations, CeMAP is mandated in the Level 3 Mortgage Adviser apprenticeship standard in England, and many firms that recruit trainee advisers pay for CeMAP once you join.
+Is self-study enough to pass CeMAP 3?
For most candidates, yes, provided they practise the format. CeMAP 3 is six case studies of ten questions in two hours, so reading alone is not enough. Walbrook includes interactive revision for Module 3, and timed case-study practice does the rest.
+How many hours of self-study does CeMAP need?
Walbrook sets 250 hours of total qualification time, 50 for each of the five units. At 10 hours a week, that is about six months. Candidates who already work in mortgages may need less; complete newcomers to regulation often need more for CeMAP 1.
+Can I study CeMAP while working full-time?
Yes. Most candidates do. Exams are on demand, day or night, with no booking, and full registration gives 18 months. Six to ten hours a week, fixed in your diary, finishes CeMAP in six to nine months.
