A CeMAP® practice paper is a full, timed mock of one CeMAP unit exam. This page explains how our CeMAP practice papers are built for each of the five units set by Walbrook (LIBF): FRE1 and FRE2 (CeMAP 1), MRT1 and MRT2 (CeMAP 2) and ASEW (CeMAP 3, the England and Wales case-study paper). It covers what the questions look like, how to use mocks to judge readiness, and how they compare with Walbrook's own specimen papers. To start practising straight away, go to our CeMAP exam practice page. For pass marks and grades, see the CeMAP pass mark guide.
What is a CeMAP practice paper?
A CeMAP practice paper is a complete mock exam for one unit, set in that unit's official format, timing and pass mark: for example 40 questions in 60 minutes with 28 to pass for FRE1. Ours are original exam-style papers with explanations, not past papers.
Walbrook does not publish past papers, and nobody legitimate has its live questions. What a good practice paper can do is copy everything else: the number of questions, the split between standalone and case-study questions, the clock, the pass mark and the kind of thinking each learning outcome asks for. Our questions are written from the official syllabus and current FCA rules, and each one has an explanation for every option. If you were searching for PDFs or old papers, our CeMAP past papers page explains what exists and offers printable worksheets such as the FRE1 worksheet with an answer key.
Key fact: Each mock number is a fixed paper. Mock 3 for MRT1 is the same 50 questions for everyone, so scores can be compared across attempts.
How does each mock paper match its unit's real format?
Each mock paper matches its unit's official format: FRE1, FRE2 and MRT2 are 40 questions in 60 minutes with 28 to pass; MRT1 is 50 in 60 minutes with 35 to pass; ASEW is 60 in 120 minutes with 42 to pass.
| Unit | Questions | Minutes | Pass mark | Structure | Free mock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FRE1 | 40 | 60 | 28 (70%) | 25 standalone + 3 case studies × 5 | FRE1 mock 1 |
| FRE2 | 40 | 60 | 28 (70%) | 25 standalone + 3 case studies × 5 | FRE2 mock 1 |
| MRT1 | 50 | 60 | 35 (70%) | 50 standalone | MRT1 mock 1 |
| MRT2 | 40 | 60 | 28 (70%) | 40 standalone | MRT2 mock 1 |
| ASEW | 60 | 120 | 42 (70%) | 6 case studies × 10 | ASEW mock 1 |

How we spread the topics
Walbrook publishes no topic weighting for any unit, so the split of questions across learning outcomes in our papers is our own. We weight each topic by how much of the syllabus it carries:
| Unit | Largest topics in our papers (share of standalone questions) |
|---|---|
| FRE1 | FCA, PRA and the Handbook 32.5%; legal concepts 25%; markets 17.5% |
| FRE2 | Regulatory framework 25%; advice framework 25%; advising skills 17.5%; fair outcomes 17.5% |
| MRT1 | Mortgage advice and fair outcomes 15.6%; borrowers 11.1%; market context 11.1% |
| MRT2 | Mortgage types and features 32.9%; raising additional money 17.7% |
| ASEW | Solutions and suitability 20%; ethical advice 20%; specialist lending 17.5%; regulation 17.5% |
Treat these as a sensible spread, not a prediction of your paper. The real exam may lean differently on the day.
Exam tip: Do not skip a small topic because our weighting is low. On a 40-question paper, two questions on auctions or Islamic finance can decide a pass.
What do CeMAP questions look like?
CeMAP questions are single-answer multiple-choice items: a short stem, then 4 options with one correct answer worth 1 mark. Walbrook confirms "1 answer from 4" for the FSRE units only; for MORT and ASEW, our 4-option format is our convention.
There are no multiple-response, drag-and-drop or typed-answer items in any official description. Most questions test one fact or one rule applied to a situation. The wrong options are rarely silly; they are usually a real rule from a neighbouring topic. Here are two original examples, written for this page.
Worked example 1: a standalone question (MRT1 style)
A customer has received a binding offer for a regulated mortgage contract. What is the minimum reflection period the lender must allow?
- A. 7 days
- B. 14 days
- C. 30 days
- D. There is no reflection period for a mortgage
Answer: A. Under MCOB 6A.3.4R, the lender must give at least 7 days after a binding offer, and the customer may accept during that time. B is the cancellation period for a distance broker services contract, not the mortgage. C is the cancellation period for life and protection policies. D confuses the reflection period with a cancellation right, which a mortgage does not have.
Worked example 2: a calculation (MRT1 AC8.1, England, 2026/27 rates)
Two first-time buyers buy a home in England for £350,000. How much SDLT do they pay?
- A. £0
- B. £2,500
- C. £7,500
- D. £17,500
Answer: B. First-time buyer relief gives 0% on the first £300,000 and 5% on the part from £300,001 to £500,000, so 5% × £50,000 = £2,500. C uses the standard bands (0% to £125,000, 2% to £250,000, then 5%: £0 + £2,500 + £5,000). D charges 5% on the whole price. A assumes the relief covers the full price. The bands are on the gov.uk SDLT rates page; in the exam, use Walbrook's tax table. More worked methods are on our CeMAP calculations page.
Key fact: In a well-written question, every wrong option is the answer to a different, real mistake. Learning why each distractor is wrong is half the value of a mock.
How do the case-study papers work?
The case-study papers work by grouping linked questions under one scenario: FRE1 and FRE2 mocks end with 3 case studies of 5 questions, and ASEW mocks contain 6 client case studies of 10 questions each, in 120 minutes.
In FRE1 and FRE2, the case studies are Part 2 of the paper, after the 25 standalone questions, and they carry 15 of the 40 marks. In ASEW the whole paper is case studies, about 20 minutes each. A typical ASEW case describes a household (ages, incomes, debts, the property, existing mortgage and cover) and then asks ten questions that mix affordability, product choice, MCOB and ICOBS rules, protection and the house-buying process.
Our case studies always stay together and in order, as they do in the real exam. Our case study guide walks through one full scenario question by question, and the CeMAP 3 guide covers the ASEW syllabus.
Exam tip: In a 10-question case, read the questions first, then the scenario. You will notice the deciding facts, such as a credit default or a planned retirement date, the first time you read it.
How many mocks should you pass before the real exam?
You should pass 3 mocks in a row at 85% or more, with every topic at 80% or more, before you sit the real unit. That is our readiness rule, the same one the app uses; Walbrook sets no such rule.
The real pass mark is 70%, so why aim for 85%? Because a mock score varies. One good result can be luck, a familiar topic or a paper you have half-seen before. Three consecutive scores at 85% on papers you have not taken before show that your knowledge holds across the whole syllabus, with a margin for the questions on the day that you have never met. The topic rule matters as much: a candidate averaging 85% but scoring 50% on arrears can still be caught out by a paper that leans on arrears.
Meeting the rule does not mean you will pass, and we offer no pass guarantee. It means the evidence points the right way.
Key fact: Exams are on demand on Brightspace with no booking, so you can wait until you meet the readiness rule before you sit.
How should you review a paper after you finish?
You should review a paper by working through every question you got wrong or guessed, reading the explanation for each option, logging the topic and the reason for the mistake, and then drilling that topic before your next full mock, ideally within 48 hours.
- Mark guesses as wrong. A lucky guess is a gap you have not closed yet.
- Read all four explanations, not just the correct one. The distractors show you neighbouring rules.
- Log each miss by topic and cause: did not know, misread the question, or fell for a trap.
- Fix the cause. Knowledge gaps need the topic drill; misreads need slower stems; traps need the rule written out side by side with the one it was confused with.
- Retest the topic with 20 questions a day or two later, then take the next full mock.
| Miss type | What it looks like | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge gap | "I didn't know the reflection period" | Topic drill, then a one-line note |
| Misread | Missed "not" or "first" in the stem | Read the last line of the stem twice |
| Trap | Picked the 14-day cancellation right | Write both rules side by side |
For MRT2, for example, a cluster of misses on product features is the cue for the mortgage types topic drill. Our CeMAP revision guide covers longer-term revision methods.
Exam tip: Your second attempt at the same mock tells you little. Use a fresh paper to measure progress.
How do these papers compare with Walbrook's specimen paper and Revision Tool?
Walbrook's specimen papers come from the awarding body: one is free per unit, extra practice exams cost £25 per unit or £40 per module, and the Revision Tool £90 to £180 (October 2026). Ours are independent and built for volume practice.
| Walbrook specimen paper | Walbrook Revision Tool (CRT) | Our papers | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Author | The awarding body | The awarding body | Independent, written to the syllabus |
| Included free | One per unit, with registration | No | Mock 1 per unit |
| Price (October 2026) | Extra exams £25 per unit or £40 per module | £90 FSRE; £120 MORT + ASEW; £180 all modules | Pro from £6.99 a week |
| Format | The unit's own | Includes all practice exams | The unit's official format |
Prices are from the Walbrook CeMAP page. We have not reviewed Walbrook's specimen papers, which sit behind the learner login. Our advice is to sit your free specimen paper as well: it is written by the people who set the exam, so it is the best guide to their style. Use our papers for volume, topic drilling and the readiness check.
Key fact: We are not affiliated with LIBF or Walbrook, and our papers are not endorsed by them.
What is free and what does Pro add?
The free tier gives every unit its full mock 1, a 20-question quick practice with explanations, and the free study notes, with no account needed. Every unit also has a free diagnostic (for CeMAP 3, two whole case studies), and FRE1, FRE2, MRT1 and MRT2 have a printable worksheet. Pro adds mocks 2 to 10.
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Full mock 1 in the official format | Every unit | Every unit |
| Mocks 2 to 10 | No | Every unit |
| Quick practice (20 questions) | Every unit, for example FRE1 quick practice | Every unit |
| Diagnostic (20 questions in 30 minutes) | All five units (CeMAP 3: two case studies) | Same |
| Topic practice by learning outcome | No | Every unit |
| Case-study practice and calculation drills | Within mock 1 | Yes |
| Study notes | Free notes | Every note |
Pro costs £6.99 a week, £11.99 a month or £22.99 for three months, in GBP including VAT, and one plan covers all five units. You can cancel at any time from your account and keep access to the end of the paid period. Details are on the pricing page. App and web purchases are separate for now.
Exam tip: Take mock 1 cold, before you revise a unit, then again only after the topic work. The difference shows you how far the revision moved you.
Your mock paper plan
Your mock paper plan for each unit has five steps: a 20-question diagnostic, topic work on weak learning outcomes, the free mock 1 under the full time limit, a structured review, then fresh mocks until you score 85% or more three times in a row.
- Diagnose. Take the free diagnostic for your unit, such as the FRE1 diagnostic, to find your weakest outcomes.
- Learn and drill. Work through the unit guide, outcome by outcome, using topic drills on the weak ones.
- Sit mock 1 under real conditions. Full time limit, no notes, one sitting. For FRE1 that is the free FRE1 mock 1; for ASEW, the free ASEW mock 1.
- Review using the five-step method above.
- Repeat with fresh papers until you meet the readiness rule, then sit the real unit.
Plan for about one full mock every two or three days in the final week of each unit, not several a day: the review is where the marks are won. When you are ready, our pass mark guide explains how the real unit is graded.
Frequently asked questions
+Are CeMAP mock papers the same as the real exam?
No. Walbrook does not publish its exam questions, so no mock can contain them. Our papers are original questions written to the official syllabus and set out in each unit's official format, so the length, timing, pass mark and question style match even though the questions themselves differ.
+How many CeMAP mock exams should I do?
Enough to pass three in a row at 85% or more for the unit you are sitting. For most candidates that means three to six full mocks per unit, taken after the topic work rather than instead of it.
+What score should I get in a mock before I sit the exam?
We suggest 85% or more on three mocks in a row, with every topic at 80% or more. The real pass mark is 70%, so 85% leaves a margin for unfamiliar questions and nerves on the day.
+Do the mock papers include case studies?
Yes, where the real unit has them. FRE1 and FRE2 mocks end with 3 case studies of 5 questions, and ASEW mocks are 6 case studies of 10 questions. MRT1 and MRT2 mocks are standalone questions only, as in the real exams.
+How many answer options does a CeMAP question have?
Walbrook states 1 answer from 4 options for the FRE1 and FRE2 units. For MRT1, MRT2 and ASEW it says only multiple choice, without giving the number of options. Our papers use 4 options for every unit.
+Can I do a CeMAP mock on my phone?
Yes, our mocks work in a phone browser and in our app. For the real exam, plan to use a PC or laptop with a webcam: Walbrook's guidance is written for computers, and it bans tablets and phones for session-based exams.
+Do the questions repeat between papers?
Each mock number is a fixed paper, the same for everyone. Mocks 1 to 10 take standalone questions from separate parts of each topic's pool where the bank is large enough, but case studies rotate, so some reappear in later FRE and ASEW papers.
